  W.J. McMurtry General Hardware, Stoves and Tinware, south Main Street. Phenomenal has been the rapid rise of this business. Opening up business in 1885 Mr. McMurtry has forged his way to the front. He also controls an extensive hardware business in St. Thomas. The additional trade in bicycles here and St. Thomas adds materially to the popularity of this house. Jubilee Souvenir of Galt, 1897 ______________ W. J. McMurtry\emdash Galt William J. McMurtry, one of Galt's veteran retailers, is dead, after an illness extendrng over seven years. He was born in Bowmanville 63 years ago and came to Galt 37 years ago. He had lived there ever since, conducting a, hardware business on Main Street, all that time. He was one of the best known men in his line of business in Ontario„ having at one time operated five stores; two in Galt two in St. Thomas, and one in London. A widow and three daughters survive. Mr. McMurtry was a brother of Mr. T. J. McMurtry and Mrs. Robt. Collacott, Bowmanville, the former attended the funeral. Before leaving this town he was employed in the hardware store of Lee & Edsall. The Canadian Statesman 6 Apr 1922 _____________
