    • The Galt Corps was the 29th Salvation Army Corps established in Canada. Early meetings were held in the upstairs of the old fire hall on Water Street South and in the Temperance Hall which was located above John Sloan's grocery store on Water Street South, not far from the Main Street corner. Several years later property was acquired on Mill Street (later Ainslie Street South) and a two storey building was erected. This building was to serve the Galt Corps until 1950.1a

  • Notes
    • John Sloan, Family Grocer, Main Street - No more certain or more reliable evidence can be furnished of the progress of a community than the steady growth of its domestic comforts; it would therefore be a grave omission in a work of this kind if the high standing and character of the prominent grocery houses were passed over. The most favorably known engaged in this important department of trade is that of Mr. John Sloan, of Main Street, whose high reputation and experience in business is sufficient guarantee of the standard of merit attended. The business was established four years ago by the present proprietor, and it has grown, and continues still to grow, with the advancement of the town, until to-day it stands second to none in the trade. The premises occupied are 28x110 feet in dimensions and three stories in height, with basement. Mr. Sloan imports largely in crockery, and does a very considerable trade in every department of groceries, giving especial care that every article shall be of the first quality, and cultivates especially the "family trade." He carries the finest brands of tea, fragrant coffees, table delicacies, hermetically sealed goods, condiments, etc., which he sells both wholesale and retail. He gives employment to nine careful and courteous assistants, and uses two wagons in the delivery of goods to customers in town. Since starting business Mr. Sloan has never known what a quiet day is. He is a native of Canada, and a competent and enterprising business man, and held in the highest esteem in the community.

A log house, one end of which contained a little store in which Mr. Shade and his wife served at the counter, was the first building erected in the village. It was situated, according to Mr. Young, where Mr. Sloan's grocery now stands.
