Eby, Ezra E. (1895). NATHANIEL BERGEY:
To call at the Bergey home is to receive genuine Mennonite hospitality, and the writer hereby takes the privilege to state that he never met with more kind treatment than that accorded him there. Mr. Bergey is naturally of a jovial and friendly disposition, and it is no exaggeration to that none of our farmers can converse with more perfect intelligence upon events and questions of the day than he.
Mr. Bergey was born in the village of Preston, May 12, 1847. He has been twice married, being first united marriage on his 22nd birthday, May 12, 1869, to Magdalena, daughter of the late Joseph Snider, of Berlin. She was born in that town December 81, 1851, and died May 10th, 1880, in the 29th year of her age. By this marriage there were four children, as follows: John Henry, born November 22, 1869; Erwin E., September 10, 1871; William E., December 13, 1874; Joseph Harvey, August 28, 1877. These sons are respectively occupying lucrative positions in the Western States, with the exception of William, who has for several years been located in the Klondike country. The writer has had the pleasure of reading several highly interesting letters to his father here and to his brother, Joseph Harvey Bergey, at Sibley, Iowa, the latter being published in one of the Sibley papers.
Mr. Bergey's second marriage was with Leah, daughter of the late Joshua Y. Shantz, on June 16, 1881. The results of this union were ten children, of whom are still living. By the
two marriages he is the father of fourteen children. With the exception of Joshua E., all the members of the latter family are at home. The mother was born May 16, 1842. They are devout members of the Mennonite church.
Mr. Bergey has followed farming all his life, and it is altogether probable that when he is called from this vale of tears to the bourne from which no man returneth, he will be found in the harness of that noblest of earthly avocations: He never filled any public office save that of school trustee, a position he held with great credit to himself and satisfaction to all concerned in the district for many years.
The Bergey home is reached by a long lane south from Bleam's road, being situated about a mile and a half southwest of Mannheim, the family post-office, and about three miles southeasterly from Petersburg station. Mr. and Mrs. Bergey moved to this place in 1878 when his father purchased it. Nathaniel worked it on shares until June 29, 1891, when he became the owner by purchase. It was originally purchased by his father from Fred. Betchen, but formerly comprised several separate tracts. Nearby on the adjoining farm lives Nathaniel's venerable parents, Jacob and Sarah (Eby) Bergey. The venerable father, now in the 84th year of his age, is alone in this neighborhood as one beyond the years of an octogenarian. He located here some time in '18, and is a direct descendant of Ulrich Bergey. progenitor of the Bergey family in America. For one of his advanced years he is remarkably active, moving about with more elasticity than many men not half his age. He is one of the leading pillars in the Mennonite church, having been identified with that body since his youth. His devoted and aged wife, who has shared with him the joys and privations of their married life for more- than fifty years, is also remarkably active for a person who has passed the 80th milestone of life's journey: Both are now enjoying the material and spiritual results of a lie well spent while in their prime.
