      ___________

DAKIN, WILLIAM SCOTT was a native son of Galt whose father was George Dakin. He was educated locally and attended the University of Toronto where he received the degree of M. A. and in 1902, his medical degree. Following his graduation he practised in Galt.

He was prominent in the public life of the city, beginning in 1912 he served as alderman and later as a member of the Hydro Commission. He was elected mayor for one term in 1918.

He was a keen sportsman, both as a spectator and as an active participant. He was particularly interested in the hockey team, acting as team physician.

His medical practice did not suffer because of his other interests, and he found time to attend a number of postgraduate courses.

While still a comparatively young man, in his 43rd. year, he developed rapidly progressive encephalitis from which he died on June 2, 1921. The Berlin Telegraph gave the cause of death as sleeping sickness, the first case of its kind in the city, but the Reporter said this report was incorrect.

In addition to other members of his family, he was survived by his widow and three children.

In 1912 the Reporter in discussing the Town Fathers, said of him: "what he has to say he says with firmness, and at times calls into play a somewhat biting not to say withering sarcasm, as a weapon against his opponents."

This attitude had mellowed with time and in his obituary they reported:

Dr, Dakin was an outspoken but kindly disposed man, and to those who knew him well he was a good friend. He was a clever platform speaker and possessed a witty vein causing his services as a chairman to be often in demand.
