- 15 Year Old Galt Girl
SENT TO INDUSTRIAL REFUGE
FOR FROM TWO TO FIVE YEARS
Police Constable Hansen of Galt brought up three prisoners on Wednesday afternoon. Two of them are vagrants. One, James Temple, will spend ten days in Berlin jail. The other, Pat. Moran, will go from here to Central Prison for half a year.
The third was a girl of 15 summers. Her name is Florence Lovelle and she is charged with stealing 40c from Evelyn Allison at the Imperial Hotel. She was sent up to the County Judge for trial by Mayor Cant and J. P. Spiers, who also sent a letter advising that she be sent to the Mercer Reformatory for a term. Her home is not what it should be and the girl said to be incorrigible. She is rather pretty. She was given her trial at 11:45 before the County Judge, today, Crown Attorney Bowlby prosecuting. She was undefended. She said she took 40c but that it belonged to her as Evelyn Allison had borrowed 40c from her, and that she simply took what was hers.
She was pressed to plead guilty or not guilty and finally said she guessed she was guilty, though she [seemed] hardly to understand what it meant, as she claimed she had told the Allison girl if she did not pay her back the 40c, she would go upstairs and get it.
The Judge addressed the girl, telling her that he knew she is wild and apt to go astray, as he has been informed she stays out late at night and has too much liberty. Her friends are very anxious to have her looked after as both her parents are away from Galt. He then sentenced her to the industrial Refuge for girls in connection with the Andrew Mercer Reformatory for girls at Toronto, for a term of not less than two and not more than five years. She was quite unconcerned about the sentence.1a
