      (from Funeral Service Bulletin)

Bill was born the third oldest of eleven children in Galt, Ontario. Following a strong family tradition of sportsmanship and athleticism he enjoyed hunting, fishing, hockey and baseball. After moving to Alberta he continued playing hockey, however hunting and fishing became his activities of choice. In fact, it was mentioned that Bill managed to be big game hunting when both his sons (Russ and Bob) were born.

In 1929, at the age of 18, Bill moved to Turner Valley, AB to work for the Royalite Oil Company and there his lifetime love affair wth the oil and gas industry began. It was during his time in Turner Valley he met his wife Carrie, whom he married on September 4, 1937 and where his two sons were born.

In 1949, Bill was transferred to Devon with Imperial Oil. He worked in a supervisory capacity at the Devon, Golden Spike and Red Water plants.

He was transferred into the company's main office in 1955. After 43 years with Imperial Oil, he retired in 1972, as the mechanical co-ordinator in charge of gas production in western Canada.

After retiring from Imperial Oil, Bill and Carrie were joined by Russ and Bob to begin his second career of "ranching" as W.J. Sage and Sons later to be known as Sage Hereford Farms. He was involved with raising Registered Herefords for over 20 years. Twice through those years he planned to retire and sold his herds, however both times he would come home with three heifers and the herd would begin again. In 1992 he was introduced to Speckle Park and this was the beginning of a 15 year association with the breed. In 2005 at the age of 94 Bill dispersed the herd for the final time.

He managed to live on the farm until he was 97. When he made his final move to the Good Samaritan Care Center in Stony Plain, where he passed away just before his 98tht birthday.

Bill was predeceased by His wife, Carrie Sage, Son, Russ Sage; mother and father Lorne & Ada Sage; eight brothers and sisters, Ernest, Blake, Vernon, Russell, Fred, Olive, Lorne & Elmer Sage.
