A one-time Elmira resident and Kitchener sports figure who helped organize rugby in the area, George Thornwell (Fats) Ruppel, 61, of Newport News, Va., died Nov. 15 at his home of a heart attack.
He played on the Kitchener intermediate hockey team that won the OHA championship in 1922, and on the Panther football team that won the Canadian intermediate championship in 1927.
The deceased, who was also known as Thorn, was goal-tender for the hockey club and in football played left inside, a position which today is known as left guard.
He was born in Springfield, Mass., a son of George M. Ruppel of Kitchener and the late Mrs. Ruppel. The family moved to Elmira when he was a child and later to Kitchener. He moved to Newport News about 25 years ago. Surviving besides his father are a sister, Mrs. Jeanette Lott of Atlanta, Ga., and a brother, Robert of Columbus, Ga.
Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Charles A. Jolly of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, Newport News. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Newport News.
