    • Raised in Rainham Township where his family moved in 1841. Travelled to New Orleans in his youth. With his wife pioneered first farm (50 acres) in West Montrose where they lived for 30 years then to Bridgeport where they lived another 20 years. Made a lot of money holding mortgages, very mathematical mind, could figure in his head faster than others with paper. Looked like a Menonite, tall, thin and bearded - was a great singer - never backed down from a fight. Bought homes as wedding presents for many of his children. Could not read or write until later in life when his children taught him. Suffered hardening of the arteries - left a substantial sum to each child. Strong genes as his voice and laugh have come down to many of his male descendants.
