Lancaster Hotel |
- At one time or another there were five hotels in the village. Tom Ferrier owned the old hotel building on the corner of Bridge Street and the Bloomingdale road. The building is presently used as an apartment. The Lancaster House was the first hotel built here in 1840 by a Mr. Bitzer, at the junction of Lancaster and Mill Streets. In 1896 John Grasser purchased it from Habfried Hunderhager. Fred Querin sold it to Jim Walsh in 1950. The Grand Hotel, situated at the head of Lancaster Street, has passed through many owners' hands and is presently owned by George Berges. Early owners were a Mr. Albert and John Boettinger who owned it for many years.

Notes |
- THE LANCASTER HOUSE
Thie old and well known hostelry was built by one Bitzer about forty five years ago, and is now owned and kept by Mr. John Grasser, who is well known in Waterloo where he was a moulder in the agricultural works of the Waterloo Manufacturing Company for over twenty years. He was born near Hamburg in 1857, and in Jannary, 1881, was married to Miss Amelis, daughter of Martin Schade. The fruits of this union is one child, a daughter, who is now attending the Berlin High School, and also becoming an accomplished musician. Mr. Grasser is a courteous and gentlemanly soul, being in every way qualified to conduct a public house, consequently the Lancaster is one of the best kept hotels in the county. It contains fourteen rooms and is nicely furnished throughout. It is supplied with abundance of pure cold spring water which is forced by natural pressure to different parts of the premises from a large spring several hundred yards distant. Adjoining the house is a large yard neatly kept for the accommodation of guests and neighbors who wish to indulge in a friendly game of croquet or other harmless games during the summer months. This yard is a gradual slope ending in a bluff of considerable height overlooking the valley of the Grand River. The view to be obtained here is pleasing indeed, and is a most enviable feature for a country hotel,
N B. It was my intention to give some more interesting notes pertaining to St. Agatha in this letter, but owing to the fact that I am not at the present writing in possession of certain data desired to make the article complete and reliable, it has been held over until next issue. In this article there are some very interesting items and it is therefore not my intention to give it incomplete.
