      Margaret Hazel (Cumming) Bolender

In Loving Memory of Margaret Hazel (Cumming) Bolender

Margaret was born July 23, 1921. She was the youngest of four children. Her brother Wallace was most disgusted to have another sister and offered to give her away to his uncle who had only one son. In April 1944 Margaret married Lorne Bolender and moved to a farm in what is now Floradale, where she lived until 2008. They had three children, Nadine, Grant and Christine. Unfortunately, Margaret became a widow in 1961 and her son Grant passed away in 1963 from leukemia. She was a multi-tasker even before the phrase became popular, as she balanced chores, making meals, doing laundry, gardening, sewing, putting down preserves, playing her piano, attending church and family functions, and her life-long involvement in her community.

Margaret was a devoted mother, wife, sister, aunt and friend, but her real love was her grandchildren. Brenda, Jamie and Jason could always put a smile on her face when they walked in the room. Her great-granddaughter, Brenna, looked forward to visiting so the two of them could sit together and play the piano and read. Margaret was a teacher, both before her children were born and after. She started in one-room schoolhouses teaching grades 1 to 9. When she returned to teaching in 1958, she taught close to home in North Woolwich and then in the new Floradale school. Always working on her education, which she never stopped doing her entire life, she took classes in Toronto to obtain her Librarian-Teacher Certification and attended Wilfrid Laurier University where she earned her B. A. in 1975. She retired from the school board in 1982 after working at Floradale, Three Bridges, Heidelberg, and finally John Mahood School in Elmira.

Margaret must have had an explorer gene, since she took great pleasure in travelling the world and of course that included Canada. She travelled both east and west with her family and in her retirement she went to Japan, Europe, Alaska and Great Britain. She planned trips with family and friends, and would always have an itinerary of places to go and see all along the way. She was very involved in her community, and was recognized for her hard work and dedication to all of her pursuits. She was a long-time member of the United Church of Canada and worshiped in St. Jacobs and Elmira. Not content to be just a member, she was also active in the UCW. Her week did not start until she had attended Sunday Services.

Some of her many accomplishments over her lifetime included her involvement in the Elmira Agricultural Society. She was an exhibitor, joined the ladies division as a directory where she held several positions, and moved on to the Fair Board and became the first woman President of the Elmira Ag Society. She was granted a life membership after more than 35 years of service. She was an avid gardener and as a member of the Horticultural Society was responsible for the planning and planting of the Butterfly Garden at the Library in Elmira. Education was a part of her life and through that she became a very respected judge and Master Gardener in 1987. She was also a life member of the Horticultural Society, an honour bestowed on her, based on her many years of leadership and involvement in making Elmira look so nice. In later years, she was honoured to be the Oktoberfest Senior Woman of the Year in 1997 as well as being inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame in 1998 for her community service.
