Sad Death
It has been the lot of the Reporter during the years in which it has paid its weekly visits to its readers to record many painful bereavements; but It never fell to the lot of the writer to record one more distressing than that which fell upon the household of our respected old friend Mr. Hugh Fairgrieve, farmer, North Dumfries, last Friday. For a few days previous his son William R. had not been well, complaining very much of the cold, and had remained in the house sitting by the stove. He had taken some medicine but declined to consult a doctor, saying that he would be all right in a day or two. Shortly after noon on Friday he left the house and was noticed going toward the driving shed. Not returning, his aged mother became somewhat uneasy, but thought he had gone over to his brother, some distance away; but as time passed she sent out her daughter to see if she could see him. On entering the driving shed the sister was horrified at discovering the body of her brother hanging, by the neck from one of the rafters. An alarm was instantly given, but the young man was quite dead when taken down. It is needless to say that the family so painfully bereaved bear with them the sympathy of the entire neighborhood. No possible reason can be assigned for the act, Mr. Fairgrieve being a steady and hard working young man, and one that carried with him the respect of all who knew him. He was a member of the C. P. Church choir in this town, and was present at the usual services in this church on the Sunday previous. He was in the 31st year or his age, and unmarried.
