Notes |
- Mr. Batters, as our readers are aware, suffered from a stroke of paralysis. From this, despite great bodily failure, he appeared to be making a very satisfactory recovery. On Sunday evening, when visited by his old friend Mr. Richard Blain, he was quite bright and cheerful. He retired to his bed about 8 o'clock, and soon after retiring, his relatives were surprised to hear a noise in his room as if of some one falling. On investigating, they found Mr. Batters had got out of his bed and gone into another room on the floor of which he was stretched out, dead or nearly so, expiring in a very short time. His medical attendant gave it as his opinion that his heart had become involved by paralytic seizure. Mr. Batters was the last surviving son of the late Wm. Batters, his brothers, John and Thomas, having both predeceased him as well as some of his sisters, the only members of his family now surviving being Mrs. Henry McCrum, of Galt, and Mrs. Roseburgh, of South Dumfries. Mr. Batters was a very successful farmer, and some years ago entered quite largely into cattle breeding, in which he was successful. He married late in life, his wife only living about three years after their marriage, leaving one son, who is now about 17 years of age. The deceased gentleman was of a rather retiring disposition, taking but little part in any public matter. His funeral took place on Tuesday and was very largely attended. He was in his 67th year.
