Notes |
- Death of Mr. Walter Ford
It was known to most of this gentleman's friends that the disease under which he suffered was such as to preclude all hope of recovery, and that it was only a question of time as to when he would be called away. During the last two weeks, we are glad to say, he was spared much suffering, and when the end came on Sunday afternoon last he passed quietly and gently away. Long a resident of Dumfries and Galt, of an honest, kindly nature, during the life granted to him he made many warm friends, friends who parted with him with the deepest regret when he left Galt last year to engage in business in Joliette, with Mr. Slater, but who then looked forward to many happy visits in which they could talk over the events of the past here and renew the feelings of respect and affection which they entertained for him. But it was not to be. An all-wise Providence had decreed that his life of usefulness should be brought to a close, and this strong, hearty man, who left us scarcely a year ago in the enjoyment of what appeared perfect health, carried then with him the germs of a disease which once developed meant death. The first symptoms of the disease were of so little importance that Mr. Ford almost disregarded them, but as they became more troublesome he consulted medical aid, the result being that the small growth was cut out. This gave temporary relief, but in a short time the swelling commenced again, and becoming alarmed, Mr. Ford consulted leading physicians in Chicago, receiving from them the terrible announcement that his disease was cancer, and that the best medical aid could do but little for him. Becoming worse, he made up his mind to come back to Galt, and therefore disposed of his business in Joliette, arriving back amongst us about two months ago, even then but a wreck of the stalwart man who left us so short a time before. His residence here was comforting to him, but the disease speedily accomplished its work, and was we have said, on Sunday afternoon last he yielded up his spirit.
Originally a farmer, Mr. Ford some years ago joined with Messrs. George Hogg and Robert Gilholm in the Saw Mill business in Galt, carrying that on very successfully. With them he carried on also for some time the Oatmeal Mill, until that property was destroyed by fire. He was also connected with a Hub and Spoke Factory in St. Clair, Michigan, having there as partners Messrs. Joel B. Smith and Mellroy.
We cannot close these few lines without bearing our testimony to the private worth of our departed friend, and tendering our sincere sympathy to his family and relatives. His funeral took place on Tuesday last, and the remains were attended to their last resting place by a very large number of his friends.
