Notes |
- Another Aged Resident Passed Away
Another aged resident of Elmira and a former resident of Woolwich and one of the pioneers of that Township, passed away on Saturday morning in the person of Mr. Henry Ziegler. Deceased was born in Adelshofen, Baden, Germany, on June 1st, 1827. In 1848 he emigrated to Canada coming to Woolwich Township. On the 13th of June, 1848, he was married to Catherine Lackner, and for a year they lived near Heidelberg. After that they moved on the farm about 2 miles south west of Elmira where by means of industry and economy they made themselves a comfortable home and where deceased spent 41 years of his life. To Mr. and Mrs. Ziegler were born a family of 9 children, 8 of whom and 45 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren survive him. The children are: Mary who became the wife of John Koenig, now living in Nebraska; Julianna, who married Balthazar Weigel of Moltke, Grey Co.; John, of Souris, Man.; William living near Virden, Man.; Henry living at Alsfeldt, Grey Co.; Rosina, now Mrs. Fred Heimbecher, of Hanover; Catherine, who married a Mr. Doering, and is presently living in Nebraska; Philip who died when only 3 months old; and Emil living at Spruce Grove, Alta. Mrs Ziegler died on the 16th of March, 1873 and on Dec. 22nd, 1875 deceased was married a second time namely to Widow Barbara Dorst, who survives him. About twenty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Ziegler visited the German Fatherland and the home of their childhood. For the last 13 years they have lived retired in Elmira though they did not give up all interest in the farm until a few months ago when they sold it to Mr. Fred Weigel, a nephew of the deceased. Mr. Ziegler was a man of robust constitution and enjoyed good health until about a year ago he was injured by a fall from a load of straw. He lay at the point of death for some time but recovered sufficiently to be up and about again though he never regained his former strength. For the last few months a complication of ailments took hold of his system and gradually undermined his strength until the final surrender came on Saturday. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon and a large concourse of relatives and friends paid a last tribute of respect to the departed one. We extend our hearty sympathy to the family in their bereavement.
