- FRIED, Howard, 1917-2009 - Howard Allan Fried, in his 92nd year, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, June 9th, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener. Beloved husband of Elva (Diefenbacher) for almost 64 years. Much loved father of Yvonne Fried and Wayne Kurt of Baden and Stephen and Chris Fried of Australia. Special grandfather (Papa) to Katie and Maggie Fried. Dear brother of Jack (Doris) Fried and Ruth (John) Brown all of Ayr and special brother-in-law of Ruth Diefenbacher of Kitchener. Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by his parents, Ephraim and Edna (Bricker) Fried; sisters, Gladys (Henry) Innanen, Jean (Carl) Schiedel; brothers, Donald, Walter and brother-in-law, Nyle Diefenbacher. Howard and Elva farmed outside of New Dundee on Queen Street their entire lives and successfully developed "Spruce Acres Holsteins" to prominence. Howard's commitment to hard work and keen livestock management skills resulted in the development of many high production and show-winning cattle. Spruce Acres cattle achieved many Superior and Lifetime Production awards and Star Brood Cow certificates over the years. Spruce Acres bred Holsteins were exported to many countries including the UK, Italy, France, Mexico and the United States and continue to have a positive influence on the Holstein breed in these countries today. During his career, Howard purchased a number of high profile cattle and further developed them to success through selective breeding and sound management practices. An active member of the Waterloo Holstein Breeders Club, Howard earned the respect of his peers for his success in developing his Holstein herd to the highest level of achievement possible. His gentle nature and sense of humour will be missed by all who knew him. Howard was a committed and supportive member of the Wilmot Centre Missionary Church for over sixty years. Visitation will be held at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Wilmot Centre Missionary Church on Monday, June 15, 2009 at 2 p.m. followed immediately by the burial at the Wilmot Centre Cemetery. Pastor Don Mills and Pastor Wayne Domm officiating.
