Notes |
- Death of One of Ayr's Oldest Residents
Mr. Andrew McEwan, who, for some years past, had figured as one of Ayr's, oldest residents, passed away at 5 a. m. on Thursday morning, at the ripe age of 96 years. Up to within the last couple of years he retained his mental and physical vigor remarkably well, and indeed, except for a week or ten days before the end came, he experienced very little illness or physical incapacity. Always of a robust constitution, and a man who delighted living the simple life, eschewing everything pertaining to riotous living, his years were increased away beyond the ordinary span of life, and even when lying on his bier he presented the appearance of a vigorous man reposing in restful sleep. The deceased was born at Neilston, Scotland, in 1814 and came to Canada at the age of about 28 years, settling in the neighboring township of Blenheim, where he followed the occupation of a farmer for some years. Later he was engaged as bookkeeper with the Goldie Milling Co. for a quarter of a century, but of late years had lived retired, having made a competence for himself and family. A Scotchman by birth, he was naturally a Presbyterian in religion and a Liberal in politics. He was also widely read and a deep thinker. A large family survives, the deceased having been twice married. Two of his eldest daughters - Mrs. Hunter and Mrs. Armstrong - reside in England, and two others - Mrs. Robert Anderson and Miss Francis - in Vancouver, B. C.; Miss Jessie in Chicago and Mrs. A. McCosh at Sharon, N. D.; Walter at Galt, John A. in Toronto and Miss Annie at home. A brother, Mr. Walter McEwan, sr., resides at Vancouver and a sister, Mrs. Annie Corsan, at Ottawa. The sons and one daughter, Miss Jessie, were home for the funeral, which was postponed from Saturday to Sunday to admit of the latter reaching here in time. Rev. John Thomson, who was deceased's pastor for a period of nearly 40 years, conducted the services. Interment was made in the Ayr cemetery, the pallbearers being old friends of the late Mr. McEwan, Messrs.: John G. Watson, C. McGeorge, Henry Elliott, J. L. Black, D. McColl and James Malone.
