- John Gemmell
Passing of Respected Citizen in His 80th Year
One of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of the community in the person of John Gemmell, Colquhoun Street, passed away on Sunday evening, in his 80th year. Deceased had been ill for some time and his demise was not unexpected. Mr. Gemmell was born in Galt of Scottish parentage and removed with his family, when but a wee lad, to the farm now occupied by his son, David Gemmell, 2 miles east of Ayr. The family was listed among the early settlers of this vicinity and engaged in much of the pioneer work necessary to bring the land into the high state of cultivation in which it Is found today. Deceased served in the North Dumfries Council for several terms some 30 years ago, and was a member of Knox United Church. In politics he was a staunch Liberal. After many years of successful farming he retired to Ayr, in 1918, where his wife, whose maiden name was Rachel Lothian, passed away about five years ago. The following family survives: Mrs. James Welsh and David Gemmell, North Dumfries; Miss Jessie, Ayr, and John Gemmell, Toronto. The following three sisters also survive: Mrs. James L. Robson and Mrs. Andrew Hall, Ayr, and Mrs. William Guthrie, Paris. The funeral took place to the Ayr Cemetery yesterday afternoon and was largely attended.
