- Passing of a Pioneer
Peter Currie. Toronto, Succumbs After a Short Illness
The pioneers of this section are rapidly passing away. On Sunday last Mr. Peter Currie, Toronto, a former resident of this community, joined the throng that have gone before. He was born near Ayr nearly 84 years ago, and had lived here all his life up to about 15 years ago, when he removed to the Queen City. Usually of a robust constitution, he had been ill only a few weeks when death supervened. The deceased, who was a bachelor, was of a retiring, unassuming disposition, and was highly esteemed for personal worth. When here he was a consistent member of Stanley Street Church, and in politics was a Liberal. Two brothers, William and John, predeceased him, while a sister, Mrs. Christie of Toronto, survives. Mrs. Robt. Smuck, Paris road, and Mrs. Bell, Galt, are nieces. The funeral took place to the Ayr cemetery Tuesday morning on the arrival of the train from Toronto, Rev. J. J. Brown conducting the service. The pallbearers were Messrs. John L. Black, Douglas Lillico, Currie Smuck, Ewart Bell, Thos. Guthrie and Robt. Smuck. Among the relatives from a distance who attended the obsequies here were Mr. Fred. Currie, Guelph; Miss Christie and Mr. Wanless, Toronto, and Mrs. Bell and son Ewart, Galt.
