His parents both died before he had passed the age of twelve years, but he surmounted the obstacles and discouragments, he was twenty years of age he had finished his three years apprenticeship of the wagon making trade, having spent the time intervening in the home of his grand parents with no apparent hope of promised for the future but hard work and poverty.
In 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Geirbe, who died thrteen years later in Caledonia, Michigan leaving hime with four little children the youngest being only six months.
In 1881 he was married to Miss Caroline Mier. To this union seven children were born, three sons and four daughters. He spent four years in Caledonia operating a wagon making shop of his own.
Unfortunately he could not endure the hard work of the wagon shop and thus decided to go North And in 1882 he moved to Charlevoix County where he bought the farm near Bay Shore which he improved and made his home for thirty seven years. By time he had come to the faded evening
of life with an unsteady step and several years of practically total blindness had the farm pact by. So he decided to sell and soon moved to Jackson where he spent the remaining two years of his life with his daughter Sarah, as desire often expressed by him during the years that were gone by.
The great outstanding principle of his character which has always demanded the respect of dear of all who knew him and will hold a sacred place in the memory of all his children was his unwavering honesty in all matters of business. Indeed, it may will be said "Here was an honest man."
He is survived by the widow, five sons and three daughters; - Walter, of Vermontville; Lincoln of Big Rapids; Oscar of Petoskey; Amos of Caro, Otto of Jackson and Mrs Sarah French of Jackson Mrs Emma Boening of Oakland, California, and Mrs. Lydia Dickerhoof of Charlevorix.
