Notes |
- Struck by Car, William Williamson Dies of Injuries
The community was shocked on Saturday morning by the death of one of its well-known rural residents as the result of being struck by a car. William Williamson, 75, who has farmed for many years about two miles north of Ayr on the Ayr - Black Horse road, died in K-W Hospital at 12.30 p.m., about three hours after the accident. According to Ontario Provincial Police Constable Hibbard of Kitchener, Mr. Williamson was crossing toward the west side of the road, almost in front of his home, about 9.30 a.m., when he was struck by a car driven north by Charles M. Haines, 75, of Mount Pleasant. Constable Hibbard said Mr. Williamson was apparently going to check on some brush which he was burning across the road. Dr. John Holland of Ayr was summoned and the injured man was removed to hospital. His death was attributed to shock, multiple fractures and other injuries. An inquest will be held. It was the second death within a week from the same cause to sadden this community. The previous Tuesday, Herald Plumstead of Brantford, formerly of Ayr, died after being struck by a car on a Brantford street. Mr. Williamson was born at Greenfield, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Williamson. Early in life he learned the barbering trade in Galt and later worked in Saskatoon and Montreal for some 17 years. He returned to farm at the present location for the rest of his days. Mr. Williamson was a member of Ayr Masonic Lodge and an adherent of Knox United Church here. He is survived by his wife, the former Charlotte Kerr; a son, Russell of Kitchener; a daughter, Mrs. Donald Rabb (Ruth) of Tillsonburg; a brother, Albert of Sheffield, and a sister, Mrs. Casey Herriot of Galt. Five grandchildren also survive.
The Funeral
Funeral service was conducted on Tuesday at the W. O. Ball Funeral Home by Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Gordon Marshall, Roland E. Maeder and James Rutherford of Ayr district; David Herriot, RR 1, Branchton; William Birley, RR 3, Paris, and Lloyd Williamson, Rockton.
