      Feb 15, 1885

Dear Brother and Sister and Family:

I write you these few lines to let you know that we are all well at present hoping this will find you all well. I have no news to rite it has been very cold here we have had no thaw since the first of January. Bell says she is well and she hopes you are well and doing well and you must send her word how Andrew and Sammies(?) is but I guess she knows how Jenkins is. James Nichols will cut them all out if they don't mind. They had a great fire in Caledonia last Friday night the end of the bridge and all William Brown's block is burned up till Ropers. 14 houses burned some say 16 they say that it started from an ash pile someone put out with fire in them.

Clover seed is cheap this year $6,25 cts red is 470 cts and it turned out very thick(?) And there was so much white clover seed that it spoiled the sale of it. They say 100 and 80 dollar s for some old store over there beside Caddles school house. He won't give that for a house over their he thinks he had better rent a house first to see how they get along. Have not had one word from Andrew this while we heard he was to have his sale 5th of this month have not heard anything since. We expect a calf one of these nights or day. Butter is 16 cts only eggs 20, wheat 80, potatoes 25, apples 20 a bushel, dried apples a dollar per bushe l. Now I will stop tonight they are all in bed but me and Jane. I hear Sarah has got another son I ought to write t o them to but their turn will be next. There has been 5 letters wrote he e today and this is the only one I wrote I hope you won't take so long to answer this as I have done. But I knowed when father and mother got the news that you would get it too. Goodbye tonight may be I may think of something more in the morning. Jane is going to write Annie a piece in the morning write soon and don't forget.

      Jannet Rutherford

Demise of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Rutherford - Married About 50 Years, and In Death They Were Not Long Divided

There passed away within a week of each other an aged couple in the persons of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rutherford, lot 36 con. 10, North Dumfries, who had lived together for half a century and in death were not long divided. Mrs. Rutherford was the first to cross into the great unknown, her death occurring on Tuesday Jan. 4th, the husband, following on Monday, Jan. 10th. Both had attained a good age, the wife being in her 76th year and Mr. Rutherford in his 84th. Theirs had been the simple, unostentatious life, and the attachment which existed between them was evidence of years of tender companionship. Mrs. Rutherford was Williamson, her birth place being Oneida Township. The husband was born at Cheviot Hills, Scotland, and came to Canada at the age of 8. He had been about 30 years on the farm on which he died. He was the last close of kin on his side of the house. Both were members of Knox United Church, Ayr, and in politics were Conservative. The family comprises four daughters and two sons, viz.: Mrs. A. Dryden, Galt; Mrs. G. Wallace, and Mrs. W. Little, North Dumfries; Elizabeth at home; Robert and James at home. Mrs. Rutherford leaves three brothers and three sisters. They are: James Williamson, Wayside, Georgia; David Williamson, Manitoulin Island; Andrew Williamson, North Dumfries; Mrs. And. Nichol, North Dumfries; Mrs. G. Hodgson, and Mrs. G. McDonald, Manitoulin Island. Interment was made in the Ayr cemetery on Jan 6 and Jan. 12 respectively. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Wesley Snyder, Thos. Sheard, John Hodgson, And. Nichol, Jas. King and W. Gemmell. The same gentlemen acted in both cases, with the exception that yesterday M. And. Williamson was substituted for Mr. Hodgson, and Mr. Alex. Edgar for Mr. Sheard. Rev. Mr. Brown conducted both services.
