  • Notes
    • "Scotch House" J. Melross, Dry Goods, Main Street - J. Melross, Dry Goods, Main Street - Among the lately established business houses in Galt of particular note is that known as the "Scotch House," of which Mr. J. Melross is the proprietor. This house was established in September of the present year, although Mr. Melross previously conducted business for eighteen months in Fergus and eight years in Beeton. The premises occupied are large and commodious, being 24x75 feet in dimensions and two stories in height, and eligibly situated in the heart of the town. Here a very large and well selected stock of staple and fancy dry goods is carried, consisting of all the latest patterns and novelties in the different lines, which are selected with great care, and specially adapted to meet the public demand according to the seasons. In the short time Mr. Melross has been in business in Galt his trade has wonderfully developed, and now extends throughout the town and surrounding sections of the country, the business comparing favorably with any of the old established houses in the town. He gives employment to six competent and courteous assistants. Mr. Melross is a native of Scotland, and has resided in this country for twelve years. He is possessed of all those sterling qualities so inherent in the Scottish nature, and which have made them a dominating power in all civilized portions of the world. Mr. Melross was a member of the Town Council in Beeton.
