- William Ainslie Melross was a noted professional lacrosse and hockey player (including the Hamilton Tigers) from the early twentieth century, in both Galt and the Calgary area.. The Melross family was originally from Newton Mearns (near Glasgow), Scotland where they were merchants. Melross is remembered in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. After returning to Galt from Alberta, he established an insurance and real estate business in town.
