- ANDREW OLIVER, PRESTON, ESCAPES DEATH AT THE HANDS OF ENRAGED TRAMP.
Preston, June 25. - Last evening as Andrew Oliver, a prosperous farmer living outside of the corporation on on the Galt road, was attending his many chores, he found a tramp lying in his sheep pen, apparently under the influence of liquor. Mr. Oliver requested him to leave the premises.
Unnoticed by Mr. Oliver, he drew a knife from his pocket, and in a rage, deliberately attempted to stab Mr. Oliver in the heart. Fortunately the knife missed the mark, striking him in the armpit of the left arm, arm, inflicting a deep wound in the left arm, measuring fully three inches in length
Not satisfied, he circled about Mr. Oliver, repeatedly attempting to stab him, but being warded off he disappeared in the darkness. Mr. Oliver was taken to Galt where his wounds were attended to, and the chief of police notified.
Early this morning, Chief Levan of Preston, was notified of the occurrence, and ordered to keep watch for the offender, out the chief had already his man in custody, found him on the streets at having midnight, and not being satisfied with his appearance, placed him in the cells. He gave his name as William Rogers.
The prisoner was identified by Mr. Oliver, and appeared before Magistrate J. D. Webster this morning, and pleaded guilty of the charge of stabbing with intent to kill. He was remanded to the Berlin jail.
Note: Jailor Cook says the man has been in jail here before.
