  • Notes
    • George Lee was a skilled watchmaker and jeweller, who operated a business at the north west corner of Water and Main. The family home was a rough cast frame building on Melville St. which was later demolished to make room for the Central Presbyterian Church Sunday School building. He had a long time association with the Associate Presbyterian Church, now First United Church and served for many years as the church secretary. Mr. Lee became a member of the Galt Subscription and Circulating Library in 1842 and soon succeeded Mr. Hunter [Hugh Hunter] as the town librarian. Mr. Lee was also elected to the School Commission of Dumfries in 1842. He was the father of the noted inventor of the Lee-Enfield rifle, James Paris Lee.

      _____________________________

I have attended to your directions in respect to the Common Seal, which has been engraved by Mr. George Lee of Galt, in a highly crediable manner, and at as little cost as it could probably have been obtained in any part of America. I thought it right to have the seal engraved by an inhabitant of the distric rather than employing a person living at a distance, more particlarly as as upon inquiry, I ascentained that there was every prospect of the work being satisfactorily performed. Before using the seal it will be advisable to pass a By-law to authorise the form.
