• Notes

  William Trussler reported the township's only sawmill powered by a portable steam engine, on the southeast corner of the Huron Road and the western township line. His daybook for the years 1864 to 1893 provides more evidence of his operations. In April 1870, for example, William Main contracted with Trussler to work for one year at $110, receiving just a little over half as cash with the rest as clothes or tools. Also powered by steam was the more distinctive business at Bridgeport reported by Isaac E. Shantz, general merchant of Bridgeport. He employed eight men and six boys in a cooperage and wood-working shop that did mainly custom work; their headings, staves, shingles and rakes were valued at $5,075. Shantz, who was married to a daughter of the Bridgeport miller, Elias Eby, was still in business there in 1878 when he was listed in Armstrong's gazetteer and also became postmaster.
