  • Notes
    • John B. Love Passes In 93rd Year - The death occurred in K-W Hospital, Kitchener, early Friday morning, the result of a fall on ice several weeks ago, of John B. Love in his 93rd year. Born in Haysville, December 1, 1876, elder son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Love, he spent his early years in the employ of neighboring farmers and the cheese factory at Haysville. Following his marriage to Charlotte Hawes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hawes, he was employed for a year with the twine company at Doon. He came to Ayr in 1903, where he was employed for some years with the John Watson Mfg. Co. He then went into business for himself as a general handyman-and he certainly was just that-repairing and installing well cisterns and septic tanks and drains, carpentering, painting and cement work. He was an expert watch and clock repairman, and spent the winter and early spring hunting and trapping at which he was quite proficient. He was also a beekeeper for a number of years.

Interested in music he played the violin, along with his father, for dances, in the early years in the vicinity of both Haysville and Ayr. He was also a drummer with former Ayr bands. Following his retirement some 20 years ago, he became a meteorologist for the Ontario government and was known locally as the Ayr weatherman, making monthly reports for the Ayr News. A better than average acrobat in his younger days, he became interested in distance running when about 30 years of age, later entering the annual Ward Marathon at Toronto; he finished second on one occasion. He came sixth in one of Hamilton's around-the-bay marathon.

Probably his most notable achievement was when he won a 10-mile race at Berlin (Kitchener) in the morning, took the train to New Hamburg at noon where he placed first in a 5-mile run in the afternoon; here it rained and the race was held in the old rink. About 1910 Johnny won the only 10-mile race ever held in Victoria Park here, competing against prominent runners from Toronto, Hamilton and other centres. He played in the band before and after the race. Distance seemed to matter little to him; for years he bicycled to and from Oshawa every summer to attend his church's camp meetings. Mr. Love was a Seventh Day Adventist, being a member of the Galt church.

Surviving are one son, Archie of Toronto; six daughters, Mrs. Walter (Agnes) Goodfellow, Ayr; Mrs. E. (Mary) Tuckwell in California; Mrs. Beatrice MacMillan, Guelph; Mrs. Allan (Vera) Feather, Galt; Mrs. Frank (Dorothy) Sanders, Burlington, and Mrs. Frances Weller of Ayr; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Walter of Plattsville and Russell, Galt. He was predeceased in 1946 by his wife and some years ago by a daughter Pearl (Mrs. Wesley P. Ennis). The Funeral - Funeral service was held Monday from Coutts and Son Funeral Home, Galt. Pastor M. Weststrate of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Galt, officiated, assisted by Brother Donald.
