      Berliner Journal Sept. 16, 1897 Baden News Dr. Nichols will be leaving Baden and Dr. Butler will take over his practice.

      Berlin Daily Telegraph August 29, 1910: Baden Dr. J. A. Butler who had a good medical practice in Baden, sold his property and practice to Dr. Gillespie of Seaforth. Dr. Gillespie takes possession Sept. 1st. We wish him every success. Dr. Butler intends to visit the larger hospitals in New York city for a few months before he starts in his new field.

      Canadian Medical Association Journal Jan. 14, 1961: John Ainley Butler, aged 85, died Dec. 10 in Bowmanville Memorial Hospital. A graduate of the University of Toronto in 1897, he practised in Baden and Newcastle, Ont.

      Village Saddened By Dr. Butler's Death

      Newcastle -The village was saddened on Saturday morning to learn of the passing of Dr. John Ainlie Butler a prominent citizen of this community for the past 47 years in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. He had entered hospital on Friday night. Born at Oakwood In Victoria County on April 23rd, 1875, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard P. Butler, he received his public school education in Oakwood and after receiving his matriculation in the Lindsay Collegiate he continued his education at Toronto University where he graduated in Medicine. After practising medicine at Baden and in Toronto, he purchased the practice of the late Dr. Oliver and moved to Newcastle in 1913.

      In addition to his medical practice in this community, the late Dr. Butler took a keen interest in municipal affairs in the village having served on the school board, and village council holding the of fice of Reeve of the village in 1923 when the Newcastle Community Hall was officially opened, an office he held until 1925, and was active for many years as a member of the Durham Lodge A.F. & A. M. No. 66, the Newcastle Lions Club, the Newcastle Horticultural Society and the United Church. Because of poor health the Doctor was forced to retire from practice in 1948 and has been inactive since.

      The late Dr. Butler is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Stella Anderson and Miss Cora Butler and one brother Mr. George Butler, all of Newcastle.

      His late wife, the former Ida Christine Edmunds and three brothers, Fred, Roy and Floyd predeceased him. A private funeral service was conducted in the Morris Funeral Chapel in Bowmanville at 2 p.m. on Monday with the Rev. E. C. Woodland and the Rev. D. R. Dewdney officiating. Interment was made in the Bond Head Cemetery.

      Pallbearers were Messrs. Harry Jose, George Graham, Frank Hoar, Percy Hare, H. Gibson and Lloyd Stephenson.
