    • Mts. Melissa Sherk

The death occurred at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Harvey Gampp, Snyder's Road, of Mrs. Melissa Sherk, at the age of 78 years. She had been ill for about a week and death ensued from a heart attack.

The late Mrs. Sherk was a descendent of pioneer stock who settled in the Niagara peninsula over a hundred years ago, originally coming from Germany. She was born in Welland County in 1854. Her maiden name was Melissa Beam and in 1873 she was married to Jonathan Sherk.

They farmed for many years in Welland County district.

In the fall of 1911 they moved to New Hamburg where they resided for a couple of years, again returning to Humberstone until 1921 when owing to her ill health, they came to live with their daughter.

Her husband predeceased her about four years ago, but she leaves her daughter, Mrs. Gampp and one son, Claudius of Welland, one sister and one brother, Mrs. Sarah Roth, of Baden, and Menno Beam of Welland. The latter is 95 years of age.

The deceased was a faithful member of the Reformed Mennonite church and was highly esteemed.

The funeral, which was largely attended, was held on March 26, from the residence of her son-in-law, thence to Hosterler's Church and cemetery. Services were in charge of Fred Weicker and Wilmer E. Steele. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, Eli Roth, Ed. Roth, Enos Hunsberger, Frank Weaver, Harvey Steiner and Warren Neff. Relatives attended from Buffalo and Williamsille, N.Y., Port Colborne, Humberstone, Ridgeway, Stevensville, Niagara Blvde, St. Catharines, Guelph and Arkona, Ont.
