    • Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Payne Jr., of Fogo Harbor, Newfoundland; husband of Cora Payne, of 162, Rose Avenue, Toronto, Canada. Was an Anglican Minister. Graduated from Huron College in 1916, winning high honours in Divinity and Arts. Enlisted for active service shortly afterwards.

      "'He is not dead. I know he is still living,' wife Cora told the Star. The brave little lady received a telegram that her soldier husband was killed on August 30." (Toronto Star, Sept 18, 1918)

      "Pte Rev Harold Payne was killed during a brilliant attack upon Upton Wood on Aug 30. Reports from the front state that Pte Payne displayed great courage as he put himself at the head of his platoon after many were killed." (Toronto Star, Nov 28, 1918)
