- In 1835, from Oensbach, Grand Duchy of Baden, between the Rhine and the Black Forest, Philip and Caroline Fischer and their children travelled to Canada. They settled first in the Dundas area, and then in Waterloo, Ontario. Their second child, Margaret Fischer, born in Germany in 1832, met and married Xavier Schuller and settled in St. Agatha. Margaret Schuller eventually became the grandmother of Johanna Strauss when her only daughter Mary, in 1886, married Anthony Strauss, and in 1891 gave birth to Johanna, subsequently Johanna Strauss Sehl.
A treasured story has been passed down through this family that when Xavier and Margaret Schuller settled in St. Agatha and began clearing the land and preparing the wood to build their house, they had to build fires around themselves at night to keep the wolves away. The sturdy house they built still stands today. After their marriage Johanna's parents lived with her grandparents in a separate part of the house. Mary and Anthony Strauss had six children but two died, one in infancy, a boy, and the second, Amanda, of diphtheria, at the age of six in 1902.
Johanna, born at home in the summer of 1891, grew up on the farm, the only surviving daughter, with her three remaining brothers. Much was expected of her and much was given. Johanna, as a girl, had the responsibility for feeding the chickens and other fowl on the farm, and collecting the eggs. She helped with the milking and ran the cream separator machine; she planted and weeded the vegetable garden, and picked and canned fruits and....
