- Death of Dr. Wamsley [sic]
The death of D. D. E. Walmsley, a former resident of Waterloo Co., occurred at South Lyon, Mich., on Sunday, Jan 22nd , at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 12 days. The funeral took place at Elmira on Wednesday morning from the G. T. R. station to the Union Cemetery for interment. The late Dr. Walmsley was born in Waterloo County. He first taught school, afterwards entering the medical profession. He practiced his profession for about forty years. For a score of years he has been a resident of Detroit. Before moving to that city he resided at Elmira for nearly 20 years. He was well and favorably known in this county, and a wide circle of friends will regret to learn of his death. He was twice married, and is survived by his wife and three children, viz: Mrs. Menger, Mrs. White and Charles, of Chicago.

How The Vickerage Got its Name
The spelling of the name of the house reflects its builder as you will see from the following history. Lot 146, the land where the houses known as 86 and 90 Moir Street now stand, was first recorded in 1859, owned by Charles Allan of Elmira. It appears to be one of about 25 lots he owned. The Lot seems to have been vacant, at least with no dwelling, until after his death in 1868. At that point, Charles Scott made an agreement with Grace Walmsley, Charles Allan's daughter, and her husband David Lewis Walmsley, to purchase Lot 146 for $180 to be paid over a period of four years. It would appear that Charles Scott did not meet his obligation because, in 1872, Thomas Vickers purchased Lot 146 from the Walmsleys for $175. Through the 1870s, Vickers acquired other lots around the original lot. Was there already a building on that lot in 1872? We don't know that yet and we may never know. The assessment records for the years between 1868 and 1890 were lost and the deeds are very hard to read.

WALMSLEY, DAVID LEWIS was born in Waterloo county in 1840. He died in Detroit on January 22, 1911. He was married twice, his first wife with whom he had three children died in 1872, and his second wife survived him.
Following his preliminary education he taught school before entering Victoria University where he graduated in 1866. He settled in Elmira to begin thirty years of practice in that village. His card in the Canadisch Volksblatt in February 1866 said that his residence and office were in the house where Dr. Ghent had resided.
In addition to his practice he had an apothecary shop, and his advertisements are found in local newspapers.
In a letter to the Canada Lancet complaining about lack of protection against quacks under the Medical Act he saidi "I am pested by one of these gullers of the public." He did not identify the quack concerned.
On August 3, 1892, the Deutsche Zeitung announced:
Mr. Walmsley, M. D. has sold his apothecary business to his local colleague Dr. Ullyot and intends, as we have heard, to remove to Detroit.
On September 15, the Berliner Journal said: Dr. W. W. Geikie of Toronto is the successor of Dr. Walmsley in Elmira.
In Detroit he practised as a specialist, the field unknown, and retired in 1910. He died of a heart condition in 1911. and was survived by his widow and the three children of his first wife .

Death of Dr. Wamsley
Word was received here Monday that Dr. D.L. Walmsley, had died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Wm. Menger, at Blue Island, Chicago., Dr. Wamsley was many years a citizen of Elmira where he practiced medicine many years ago. Later he associated himself with Dr. Lutz. The firm did a medical and drug business for some years. When Dr. Lutz left the partnership. Mr. A. Werner became partner in the drug business which was continued under the firm name of Walmsley & Werner, until some 29 years ago when Mr. Werner commenced business on his own account. Later Dr. Walmsley disposed of the drug business. In 1891 he was succeeded in his medical practice by Dr. Geikie. He then moved to Detroit where he be came interested in a manufacturing concern at the same time. continuing in the practice of medicine, Feeling the infirmities of old age asserting themselves, he disposed of his practice a year or so ago with a view of retiring. While visiting his daughter Mrs. Wm. Menger at Blue Island he fell victim of heart failure and expired rather suddenly.. Deceased leaves a widow (his second wife) a son (Charles) and a daughter. During his residence at Elmira he enjoyed the respect of his fellow citizens to a high degree. He was successful in business and will be gratefully remembered by many of his patients who owe much to his skill as a medical practioner.
Later, Dr. Walmsley died at New Lyon, Michigan, and not at Blue Island, as reported. His remains were brought to Elmira where they were interred Wednesday forenoon.
