Notes |
- David Markham did not die before the 1911 census, despite his wife Anna being enumerated as a widow on that census. He died 09 Jan 1921 in Mentor Township, Oscoda Co., Michigan.
David spent most of his adult life as a brickmaker in Croswell, Michigan. He quickly abandoned Anna and married Jane (Jennie) Smurthwaite in Port Huron, St Claire, Michigan on 09 Sep 1874. I have not determined if there was a Michigan divorce (which would not have had legal standing in Ontario) but I suspect the wedding was bigamous. Two US born children are known (and a third is likely). His brother James married Sarah Ann Smurthwaite in Port Huron, Michigan in May 1875. I suspect that the two wives were sisters, and daughters of a Michigan brickmaker named Thomas Smurthwaite.
On the 1871 census Anna was enumerated as a widow, under her maiden name. I don't know if she really thought that she had been widowed or if that was just the story she was telling. On the 1881 and subsequent censuses she was once again enumerated as Anna Markham. She was listed as married in 1881, 1891, and 1901. David was in Berlin with Anna for the 1891 census, but on the 1900 Michigan census he was in Michigan, listed as divorced. He was a naturalized citizen and had supposedly lived in the US continuously since 1865 (clearly not correct).
