August Henry Wittmaak opened a hardware store on the south side on October 2nd, 1882, sold it to B. H. Kopeman about 1892. Meantime he was appointed local agent of C.P.R. Tickets and Telegraphs and of Dominion Express Company and for years conveyed passengers and express shipments by horse-drawn vehicle to the C.P.R. Station at Galt to meet certain trains.
He moved from Queen Street into a small building at the street end of Ike Queens Hotel shed, later occupied as a shoe repair shop by John Wilkinson and after him, by George Hilker. When the Trolley line was built to the Guelph Road in 1895 or 96 they had only a small building. Later on the present one was erected and Wittmaak then moved into it. He was assessor of Hespeler from 1897-1913 and did a good job.

NIAGARA FALLS MAN
Dies Suddenly Where Daughter Graduated As Nurse
Kitchener, June 3. - The sudden death of August Henry Wittmaak, of Niagara Falls, occurred at the Kitchener and Waterloo hospital this morning, caused by heart failure. He had come to the city to attend the graduation exercises of the Kitchener and Waterloo hospital, which took place on Tuesday, his daughter, Miss Edith Wittmaak, being a member of the graduation class. He was apparently in good health, but yesterday morning he became afflicted with heart trouble and was removed to the hospital, where he succumbed.
He was 60 years of age and was born, in Preston. He was the first C.P.R. telegraph operator in Hespeler, and later became agent of the company in that town, and had held the position for over 30 years until he resigned two years ago, owing to Ill-health. He was well known in telegraphic and railway circles. During his residence in Hespeler he had the office of assessor for a number of years.
His wife died two and half years ago, and he is survived by one son and two daughters. The burial will take place in Hespeler.
