- QUARTER OF A CENTURY IN LUTHERAN MINISTRY
An event of more than ordinary interest to Hespeler citizens and especially to the members of St. Jacob's Lutheran church, transpired Wednesday the memory of which to many will linger so long as memory serves them.
Occasion was taken to celebrate the silver anniversary of the ordination of Rev. Adolf Eggers into the ministry of the Lutheran church. No more fitting and appropriate manner could have been chosen than was pursued by the members of the church here, and of his classes at Shantz station and Breslau. Many ministers of the church and members were present to do him honor.
Rev. Mr. Eggers was completely taken by surprise, when he was formed that the church bell was ringing and that his presence was required at the edifice. Arriving there he was greeted by Rev. Dr. Hoffman, President of the Canadian Synod, clericais, and a well filled church.
The anniversary sermon was preached by Rev. E. Bockleman, Waterloo. Rev. Dr. Hoffman addressed the pastor and extended congratulations on behalf of the ministry and congregations, and also presented the pastor with a beautiful silver tea service and cake tray, reading the addresses which were tendered by the church elders of the three fields of labor, in behalf of the members.
Rev. Mr. Eggers replied with deep feeling and emotion, assuring those present that the services rendered during the past quarter of a century for the good of the congregations, were only those of the Master, and that all honor and glory was due Him. He acknowledged the expressions of their kindness and good will towards him.
At the close of the anniversary service those present, many being from out of town, repaired to the Chosen Friends Hall, where dainty refreshments were served by the ladies. The long tables were tastefully decorated and laden with many delicacies Rev. Dr. Hoffman performed the part of toastmaster in an able manner and those who responded to his call were Rev. J. M. Bicher, Berlin, who addressed them In English: Rev. Mr. Veit, Sebastopol, and Rev. Mr. Hamfeldt, of Toledo, Ohio.
In addition to the above the following ministers were present: Reva. Voss, Baden, Hamm, missionary of New Ontario; Voelker, New Hamburg; Wiegand, Broadhagen; Langhouse, Philipsburg; Hansen, Conestogo, and Prof. Linke of the Lutheran Seminary, Waterloo.
Rev. Adolph Eggers, who received his education in the leading schools of Germany, came to America in 1887, arriving at New York City on June 3rd. His first sermon was preached to the congregation of Rev. Dr. Mohldenks, of that City. He came to Canada and with five others was ordained into the ministry at Sebastapol on June 9th. Of those who were ordained with him none are living, all having passed to the Great Beyond
He accepted a call in Quebec, where he labored for over four years, then for three years he ministered to the spiritual wants of the congregation at Auburn, Huron County, coming to Hespeler in March, 1895, where he has labored for the past seventeen -years.
The citizens of Hespeler join with the members of his congregation and the church of his adoption in wishing for him continued health and strength to labor many more years in the vineyard-Hespeler corr.
