Notes |
- John Flynn lived in Hespeler his whole life learned the harness trade from George Martin. About 1907 he opened a coal and wood business that he operated until his death in 1927. He was member of the town council and also a member of the Separate School Board.

________________________
George Martin started in 1863 and with some time out, continued until 1886. His shop was a frame building set in back a bit from the sidewalk, on the south side of the street on the lot where he afterwards built the "Schaumburg Block". East of this shop in my day was the Johnston Blacksmith Shop, west the Beattie Store which Tommy Rife built. In 1863, a man named Gottfried Marklienermeier was employed here as a Saddler.
In 1870, Joseph Baltzer; in 1879, Oliver Baker, and in 1882, Charles W. Spark worked for George Martin, Oliver Baker as an apprentice. John Flynn learned the trade with Martin, and some time after graduation moved to Ethel, Ontario, where John Cober, A. W. Panabaker and Henry Warner had gone as Waggon makers years before. After a time at Ethel, Mr. Flynn returned to Hespeler in 1886 and bought Martin out. He continued until about the turn of the century when he sold to one of his apprentices, Hughie Moran who in turn sold to Silas H. Brock. When Mr. Flynn sold out he went with M. F. Cray who at about the beginning of the century had opened a coal business here. John continued as his manager several years and then bought him out.
