Notes |
- GILCHRIST, MALCOLM
At his residence near Killean in Puslinch, on Monday morning at 4, December 1, 1890, aged 73 years. Puslinch has lost another of her worthy pioneers. He had been troubled by a slight cold for some days previous to his death but nothing was thought of it. On the previous Friday, he drove into Hespeler to take his daughter, Miss Bessie. He was suddenly cut off on Sunday, heart failure being the cause. Mr. Gilchrist was the third among six sons, who with their three sisters and parents, came to this country in 1843 from Kintyre, Argyleshire, Scotland. The township was, at that time, mostly a wilderness of primeval forest, although much of the land had been secured by intending settlers. To say it was wild was almost too flattering. Having in his youth been accustomed to the sea and sailing for several successive summers, he followed the lake navigation, spending the remaining months in cutting down the heavy growth of timber and clearing up the land. By patient industry and thrift, he hewed out the comfortable homestead, on which his declining days were spent. In 1852, he married Charlotte McMillan, youngest daughter of the late Angus McMillan, whose acquaintance he had formed in his youth in Glenbar, Scotland. After his marriage, they settled on lot 11, 1st concession of Puslinch, which he soon brought to a high state of cultivation and on which he continuously resided until his death. One son, the eldest of the family and five daughters, all grown up and his widow survive. His son, John Gilchrist is also a prosperous farmer, owning 200 acres, adjoining the homestead. The eldest daughter, Christina is Mrs. Henry Hardy of Flint, Michigan. The youngest, Miss Bessie, is successfully engaged in teaching at Hespeler. The others, Misses Annie, Mary and Charlotte are also held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends. Mr. Gilchrist was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church and devoid of ostentation or parade, a man of strong faith and deep conviction. The writer enjoyed the pleasure of his acquaintance, extending over a period of many years and had frequent opportunity of noting and admiring his intelligence and generous kindly disposition. He possessed in a marked degree, that dignified hospitality and strong individuality, which are characteristic of the Highland race. Witty, well informed and endowed with excellent conversational abilities, he was a special favourite with the young, who always found in him a sympathetic and wise counsellor. He had reached the ripe age of 73, was widely known and universally respected. His funeral on Wednesday afternoon, where Rev. Jackson of Galt conducted, was largely attended by his old friends and neighbours, despite the inclement weather. Interment took place in the little cemetery at Killean. It is only a little over two months since the death of Duncan Gilchrist, younger brother of Malcolm, who died after a short illness, at his residence near Arkell on the last Friday in September. Peter Gilchrist, also a well known resident of Puslinch, is a brother.
