Notes |
- KREIG, JOHN C.
Suddenly, on Saturday morning, February 12, 1944, in his 63rd year. Mr. Kreig was widely known in the community, well-liked and highly respected. Known to many as "Uncle Jack", he opened his store as usual on Saturday morning at 9 and started to clear away the snow in front of his confectionery shop. Finding the effort too much for him, he went back into the store to rest and succumbed within a few minutes to a heart attack. Shortly before 10, when John Newlove, a driver for a Galt bakery called to make a delivery, he found the door open but Mr. Kreig did not answer his call. As this was unusual, he investigated and found Mr. Kreig at the back of the store. Mr. Kreig was born on the Quinnell farm on the Townline in April 1881, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kreig. For many years, he conducted a tobacco business founded by his father and later, entered the confectionery business. He was a devoted member of St. James' Anglican Church and the Independent Order of Foresters and Rebekah Lodges. "Uncle Jack" had a happy disposition and a good word to say for everybody. He was actively interested in the affairs of the community and gave his support to many projects, showing a decided interest in sports, particularly baseball. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Baer; a son, Clifford of Hespeler; a daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. Gordon Flatt) of Preston; one brother, Barney Kreig; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert L. Ott and Mrs. Ronald Sawyer, all of Hespeler. The funeral on Tuesday at 2: 30 was largely attended. Members of the Merchant's Association closed their stores during the period of the funeral in respect to his memory. Service was conducted at the Stager Funeral Home by Rev. L. V. Pocock, Rector of St. James* Anglican Church, where Mr. Kreig was a member and for some years, served as treasurer. Interment was made in Hespeler
Cemetery. Pallbearers: James Bell, William G. Leitch, J. R. Smith, W. F. Hall, J. F. Kohli and Robert M. Phin.
