    • There is a little story Louis Runstedler once told me that I would like to tell to you.

      Louis was brought up to speak the German language but after he left home and was associated with people who spoke only English, he more or less lost the knack of speaking freely in German although he could always understand it.

      One day the old man, Limpert, came into the Blacksmith Shop at Jardine's and asked Louis some question in the German tongue which Louis of course understood, but when it came to replying he could not just get hold of the proper German words so he replied in English which of course Mr. Limpert understood.

      This German-English dialogue went on until Mr. Limpert had the information he wanted, and then he courteously thanked Louis in German and took his departure. After he had gone only a few steps however he stopped, turned and came back to Louis and this time in English, he told Mr. Runstedler: "Louis, you should, of yourself be dam well ashamed." And then he went his way.
