Notes |
- SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT HESPELER.
Fall of a Scaffold at the Star Mills.
Fifteen Men Hurt - One Dead and Others Fatally Injured.
(From our Correspondent.)
This (Wednesday) forenoon about 9:30 o'clock, without a moment's warning the cross beams of timber,on the second story of the rear part of Forbes & Co.'s St Woollen Mills, broke, precipitating about twenty men to the ground, & distance of some twenty-five feet. All the men were more or less injured. The following is a list of the names of those who, at the time of sending away this news, are in critical condition: - Mr. John Sachs, boss mechanic, Mr. Conwarf, sr., Edward Johnston, Fred. Sohonfeldt, John Wehner and David Guenther. Mr. Sachs it is feared will not recover from the injuries received.
Drs. Mcintyre and Lockhart are in close attendance on the patients who are most seriously injured.
It is needless to add all was done that was possible to do to relieve the injured men, In a few minutes hundreds of willing hands were engaged removing the debris from above the men, who fell with the timbers and lay buried beneath the same, and as one by one were extricated from their pinned position received kind attention in the way of washing the blood from their wounds and placed in some adjoining house or taken to their respective homes. None were allowed to be removed until examined by the doctors.
It is the worst catastrophe that has occurred here in many years.
LATER, 11:10 A.M.- Since sending previous word Mr. John Sachs has died, others are not expected to get over their injuries.
