  • Notes
    • Ludwig Huether, a German Blacksmith, came here from Albany in 1856 and started business in a building in rear of the George Guenther property, possibly the building Jacob Beck had previously occupied or maybe one of Bergey's saw mill buildings. From there he moved to a building in the rear of the lot where Minnie Ochs now lives, both locations being on the north side of Queen Street.

On March 20th, 1874, Mr. Huether bought a large lot on the south side of Queen Street and on the easterly portion of it built a house and a blacksmith shop where he worked at his trade until he retired. He died on September 8th, 1905, aged 80 years, 8 months.

In 1857, Mr. Huether was charging nine York Shillings per day for his time which would be $1.121/2. During the months of December, 1864, and January and February, 1865, he worked full time for Jacob Hespeler and received $87.50 for his three months' work as a Blacksmith. After his return from Grand Valley, John Huether operated a waggon shop on his Father's property for a short time before going to Morriston.

      HUETHER, LUDWIG "LOUIS"

Another of the old pioneers has gone to join the great majority and Hespeler on September 8, 1905 lost one of her most honoured and estimable citizens in the passing of Mr. Huether, who lived fifty of the eighty years of his life in this town. He was a native of Saxe-Weimer in Germany and crossed the ocean when quite a young man. He lived in Albany for a short time before moving to Puslinch, where he worked as a blacksmith for the late John Baer for about a year before entering the employ of the late Jacob Hespeler, with whom he remained about ten years before going into business for himself in a blacksmith shop located on Queen St. about where John Warren's house now stands. He was in business about twenty years and having amassed a comfortable competence, he retired to spend the remainder of his days in ease and comfort. He was married twice, his first wife being Ernestine Miller, who he espoused in Germany and who died here about twenty-three years ago. A couple of years later, he married Mrs. Fisher, who survives him. Of the children by the first marriage, Mrs. C. H. Liersch predeceased him some ten years; Fred and Mrs. S. Pickin reside in Hespeler; John in Morriston; and Louis in Victoria. Two children by his second marriage, Gustave and Maudie, reside at home. He was a consistent member of the Lutheran Church, a life-long Conservative and a most esteemed citizen generally. The funeral was held form his residence on Queen St. on Sunday at 1: 30 to the Hespeler Cemetery for interment and was largely attended. Services were conducted by Rev. Maas of Preston.
