- Daniel Ritz Called By Death
Was Former Publisher of This Paper and Collector of Customs
It is our sad duty this week to chronicle the death of Mr. Daniel Ritz, former publisher of this paper, who passed to his eternal rest shortly after three o'clock last Friday morning. He had been in failing health for the past three months, but was only confined to bed for one week and passed peacefully away at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 9 days.
The late Mr. Ritz was one of the prominent business men of the village for many years, and gave much of his time in promoting projects pertaining to the general welfare of the town. He was a member of the New Hamburg School Board for over twenty years and was keenly interested in educational matters.
In his business career he conducted the New Hamburg Independent and the Canadisches Valksblatt since 1885 until he received the appointment of Collector of Customs when this outport was opened in town in 1912. He retired from the service in 1921, and had since lived retired.
In politics the deceased was an able exponent of the Conservative cause and until his appointment as collector of customs served his party with unswerving fidelity. He was likewise interested in fraternal matters, being a member of the Masonic Order, Odd Fellows and the Knights of the Maccabees. He was widely known and through his generous nature he won for himself a large circle of friends.
The late Mr. Ritz was born on July 12th, 1849, in Bavaria, Germany, and came to Canada with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Ritz, in the year 1855, when they settled in New Hamburg. He had since been a resident of this town. In 1871 the deceased was married to Christina Stuhlfaut, who predeceased him three years ago. One daughter, Tillie, and one son, Otto, also predeceased him. There are left to mourn his death four sons and four daughters, namely: Walter and Erwin of Galt; Daniel E. and Lorne of this town; Mrs. Louise Kischel, Kitchener; Mrs. Albert Gentz of Elmira; Mrs. Ed. Huehn of Heidelberg; and Mrs. Wm. L. P. Seyler of this town.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon from his late residence to the family plot in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. H. R. Mosig, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted the services at the house. The last rites of the Masonic order were rendered to the deceased at the grave. The pall bearers were brethren of Nith Lodge I.O.O.F., namely, L. Hostetler, F. L. Peine, Ed. Pfaff, E. G. Hammer, G. H. Meyers and O. H. Becker.
Many beautiful floral tributes were sent by relatives and sympathizing friend, namely: Mr. and Mrs. George B. McKay, Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. P.T. Wiggins, Galt; Galt Postmen; Jacob Ritz family; Mr. and Mrs. Archie Heiman, Kitchener; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Blankstein, Kitchener; Mrs. A. S. Claughton, Port Perry; Mrs. Jack Farr, Toronto; Mrs. Betzner and Miss Sophia Betzner; Dickie and Ernst Ritz; Bobby and Nancy Hamilton, Hamilton; Mr. Fred Gruhn, Kitchener; Grandchildren; Masonic Lodge, New Hamburg; Odd Fellows Lodge, New Hamburg; Chr. Rau family; Chas. Ritz family; Mrs. Emma Schaefer, Alfred Ruthig, New Hamburg, Mrs. Jos. Heiman, Kitchener; Mrs. Bannister, Brantford; M. Schwartzentruber, New Hamburg; and Mr. and Mrs. David Hamilton, of Hamilton.
The family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the neighbours and friends for their numerous expressions of sympathy and for the many acts of kindness bestowed upon them in rendering assistance in the hour of their bereavement.
Among the relatives and friends present at the funeral from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Franke, Mrs. L. Kischell, H. Grube, Mr. and Mrs. C. Blankstein, Mr. and Mrs. R. Ritz, Mrs. E.
