      Vignettes of a Life

Harry K. Stager wrote about the horse he loved.

"I was about four or five years old the day my father came down the street, past our house leading a beautiful black mare. He used to keep a horse to deliver furniture and it was always black so it could be used in the funeral business....she used to pull the wagon we used to deliver furniture and she would team up with another black horse from Johnny Sudden's livery stable to pull the hearse when Dad had a funeral....we always called her 'Old Fan.' I don't know why... because she was very young....We had a big willow tree at the back of the stable that was right beside the Speed River. Often I would tie Fan up to the tree and spend hours cleaning her....When I was ten or eleven years old, Dad would sometimes load the wagon up with furniture and I would take it out to some farmer, maybe 5 miles out of town. Dad would draw a map for me to follow, and the farmer would take the furniture off the wagon and then I would start back home. One day I lost the map on the way home and I didn't know which road to take. So I just let Old Fan go and she knew the way and brought me home safe and sound. We kept her until about 1919 when Dad bought a truck to deliver furniture. Then Dad took her out to Uncle Arne's farm where she stayed until she died.
