Notes |
- ERNST & CRESSMAN.
These gentlemen possess individually those qualities that seem to complement each other and thus render their partnership a pronounced commercial success. They conduct a general store and their good judgment and level headed business methods have won for them a generous slice of trade. It is about a dozen years since Mr. Noah Cressman, then a prosperous merchant in an adjacent village, came to New Hamburg and joined hands with Mr. Jacob Ernst, who for over a score of years had been prominent in New Hamburg commercial life. Their stock of dry goods, groceries and crockery is always carefully selected and this fact, with fair prices and square dealing, has gained for them the confidence of the buying public. "It is a good store," say those who know. Mr. Ernst is a member of the Public School Board, having been secretary since 1888 and Treasurer since 1901.

Jacob Ernst Passes Away.
Prominent Business Man For Many Years.
In the death of Mr. Jacob Ernst, which occurred at his home here early last Friday morning, September 3rd, New Hamburg lost a citizen who, was prominent in business circles of the town for a great many years. Mr. Ernst had been in failing health for some time, but an attack of apoplexy on Monday morning of last week, hastened his death.
The deceased was the eldest son of the late Christian and Catharine Ernst and was born at Petersburg on June 12th, 1855. He came to New Hamburg with his parents when a boy and had since resided here. He entered into the general store business as a young man and continued this until about a year ago, when he sold out to Mr. H. L. Albrecht and had since lived retired.
The late Mr. Ernst took an active interest in the municipal affairs of the town and was a member of the Public School Board for about twenty years and secretary of the board for many years. He was a member of the Canadian Order of Forresters, being a charter member of Court Silver Leaf, No. 90. In religion he was a constant member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a strong Conservative in politics. He was married to Clarissa
Merner, daughter of the late Frederick Merner, of this town, who predeceased him in February 1919. Their union was blessed with two children. Their only son, Walter, died in 1901. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Lafayette Hostetler, also one brother; Mr. H. A. Erust, of this town, to mourn his departure. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late home. to Trinity Lutheran Church, where the funeral service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Mr. Mosig, and Rev. H. F. Gruhn, of Stratford. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were in attendance and very many beautiful floral tributes were sent by sympathizing friends. Interment took place in Riverside Cemetery.
