Notes |
- Frank Knox was a $I0 a week reporter on the Grand Rapids Herald in 1899, becoming by 1900 its city editor and a year later its circulation manager. Along with friend John A. Muehling he bought the Lake Superior Journal in 1902, added the Sault Sainte Marie Weekly News, and became the Upper Peninsula's two-fisted defender of lumberjacks and seamen, whose pay was systematically stolen in protected saloons. Knox's "clean-up campaign" included his knock-out of one saloonkeeper, who saw firsthand the power of the press. The windows of Knox's newspaper office were shot out. but he would not be intimidated....

Knox suffered a series of attacks over the next few days and died on the 28th at his home. Also in attendance was Paul Dudley White; though Bruenn, never acknowledged the connection, it's not unlikely that he discussed Roosevelt's case with the famed heart specialist.
