• Notes

  No sketch of New Hamburg would be complete without the name of Mr. Louis Peine connected with it. He has been so long a resident of the place, and so closely identified with its life and progress, that his name seems almost as familiar as that of the town itself. Mr. Peine was born in New Hamburg and began life as a school teacher. He soon abandoned the school room, however, for the more congenial paths of commerce. He took up fire insurance and also established a Stationery Business and for 30 years has been one of New Hamburg's most highly respected business men. Painstaking and thorough in all that he undertakes, these qualities have made him an ideal insurance man. Risks are safe entrusted to Mr. Peine. No less thorough was he in public affairs so that one would natually expect his fellow citizens to place him in positions of public trust. And such they have done. He was a member of the Public School Board for 18 years. He sat in Council and was Reeve for 6 years in succession. At the earnest request of his fellow ratepayers, he returned again to the Reeve's chair after an interval of several years. Possessing a good grasp of public affairs and being of a progressive disposition Mr. Peine has done yeoman's service in building up New Hamburg and in making it the busy centre that it is today. He is connected with at least one of the important manufacturing concerns of New Hamburg in the capacity of an excutive officer. Mr. Peine devotes himself largely to his insurance interests, the stationery store and C. P. R. ticket and telegraph office being in charge of his son, Mr. F. L. Peine.
