- FARMER DIES UNDER BINDER
(By Staff Reporter)
HAWKESVILLE. Hurled underneath his heavy binder when the team of horses suddenly bolted, Samuel M. Bowman, Hawkesville farmer was crushed to death Saturday. Hawkesville is situated 15 miles northwest of Waterloo.
While no one witnessed the accident, it is believed that Bowman was hitching the horses to the machine when they became frightened and ran away, knocking him to the ground in the path of the binder. Orie Martin, his son-in-law, discovered the tragedy.
"I was taking another team of horses into the barn when Mr. Bowman's team went racing by, pulling the binder behind them, Martin told The Chronicle. After locating Bowman, Martin hurriedly summoned Dr. L. Wagner, Elmira, but the injured man succumbed five minute after he arrived.
According to Dr. Wagner, death was caused by a fractured skull. "Mr. Bowman probably wouldn't have been working at the time he was killed, under ordinary circumstances, but due to the scarcity of farm help we have had to keep on working over the noon hour," stated Martin.
Bowman is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. O. Martin and one son, David, at home.
