Notes |
- Captain F. H. McCallum has been a prominent figure in the life of New Hamburg for 40 years. During that period he has carried on a successful drug and stationery business. He also has charge of the G. N. W. Telegraph office. He is widely known and highly esteemed for genial and kindly qualities. As might be suspected, Captain McCallum is a military enthusiast. He saw active service with the Queen's Own in the Fenian Raid of 1866 and holds a medal in recognition of his services at that period. He is a member of the Veterans' 1866 Association of Toronto, a connection of which he is pardonably proud. For 20 years he was captain in the militia for which he holds a colonial officer's decoration. He was gazetted out last year. He is naturally public spirited and served as a councillor for six years. He it was who made a move some years ago to organize a Board of Trade and, though the movement fell through at the time, it served to stimulate the civic spirit and resulted in the securing of an important industry. Just now the Captain is working along the line of a Carnegie grant for a new library.
