  • Notes
    • I sent you a German helmet yesterday, which I hope you received safely. It is camouflaged in the most improved manner and has the distinction of being picked in the main street of a burning city, which we recently captured. I had the job of building pantoon bridges for our troops to pass over just outside the city.

You will be pleased to learn that I have been given a military cross, so you see everything comes to him who waits, if he waits long enough. Just at present we have been left stranded by the side of war. I have Just taken over my new job as transport officer for the Battalion. The enemy seems to be doing surprising things and it looks as though he might quit. Hope he does, so we may all be relieved and return home. Cherio, best love to all, Gerald Hamilton, M. C. Captain.

The helmet mentioned arrived on Wedneday per parcel post. It weighs about three pounds is made of steel and painted in brown and green stripes and may be seen at Capt. McCallum's.
