Elijah and Lydia Martin
Elijah and Lydia (McAskie) Martin moved from McGregory, MD to the Swan River Valley in 190.
They settled in the Harlington District where they farmed until the spring of 1913. They moved to the Lidstone District of the Minitonas Municipality. A year later they moved to the "old Sifton place" presently owned by W. Hockaday. In 1914 the family purchased the H. Smith farm, SE-36-26 in the Floradale District.
Elijah and Lydia raised a family of seven sons and four daughters-Jenny (Johnson), Harry Russell. Louis. Winnifred (Loat), Lillian (Buhler), Leonard. Clifford. Hagel (Milna), Willis and Earl. In 1919 Lydia passed away. Later Elijah married Sarah Smith. Eventually they left the farm and resided in Swan River. Sarah passed away in 1940, and Elijah died in June 12, 1945.
Elijah became a grandfather to forty-one grandchildren. His sons, Harry and Leonard, farmed in the Floradale District for many years. Leonard and Sybil's (Foster) two sons, Lloyd and Ralph, also farmed. Ralph farmed the home farm and today Ralph's son, Garry, farms there. Ralph and Non. (Neely) are recently retired and live in Swan River. Lloyd farmed the original Russell Martin place. His widow, Leah (Allan), now lives in Swan River. Doris (Hilding) and Beth (Galbraith) also farmed with their husbands in Kerrville and Pretty Valley, respectively. They live in Swan River.
Harry's son, Gordon, began farming after returning from World War II on land adjoining the home place. His widow, Margaret (Bell) still resides there. Wallis farmed the home place until recently. He and June (Allan) have retired and is in Minitonas. Daughters Ellen (Kennedy) and Irene (Walstrom) have always called the Valley home. Ellen and Doug live in Swan River and Gordon and Irene live in Minitonas.
The original "Martin home" in Floradale is now owned by Mr and Mrs. Otto Hart. Until recently the original barn, built by the Martin brothers, stood as a silent reminder of the hard work and perseverance of a pioneer family.
Clifford and Louis farmed in the Floradale District until the early thirties, when they moved to Swan River. When Lou and Naomi (Burton) moved to Winnipeg, their son, Keith and his wife, Margaret (Osatchuck), lived in the original family home. It is perhaps one of only two homes in Swan River occupied continuously by members of the same family. After retirement Clifford and Grace's (Smith) daughter, Lorraine, has once again made Swan River her home.
